Statement
My work challenges the ways humans perceive and understand the environments we inhabit. I am interested in the limits of human perception and how our perspectives shape what we recognize, value, and overlook within the environments around us.
Working with found objects, photography, sculpture, film, and biological processes, I explore the point where human activity and ecological processes intersect. These processes become part of the work, allowing growth, decay, extraction, use, and transformation to shape how the work develops. Rather than treating the environment as a distant subject, I consider it as a network of constantly changing relationships that exists beyond the limits of human perception and control.
By looking closely at what we walk past, what holds us up, and what wears things down, my work draws attention to processes that often exist outside ordinary perception. I am interested in what becomes visible when these systems are slowed down, disrupted, or examined through physical and technological means.
Bio
Ryan Wight is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, photography, and film to investigate human relationships with ecological systems. His practice explores ecological processes, material transformation, and the ways we perceive and interact with our environment through both material and technological means.
Ryan earned his MFA from Maine College of Art & Design and his BFA from the University of Southern Maine. His work and research have been supported by experiences including the SÍM Residency in Reykjavík, Iceland, and the Monhegan Artists’ Residency off the coast of Maine.
